I received a copy in the mail the other day of this tying dvd and I thought I would give my thoughts on it. First off I want to say that I am new to tying. I am not approaching this DVD as someone experienced in fly tying. I was a little skeptical that a fly tying DVD would be something I could watch for 2.5 hours or that the people in the DVD could really help me out. I must say that this has to be the BEST fly tying DVD out there. It doesn't matter if you are like tenkara or not, you can just appreciate the awesome quality of this video. The dvd has three guys who do the tying, Dr. Ishigaki, Daniel Galhardo, and Chris Stewart.>I will say that I wish there was more of Dr. Ishigaki. He plays a minor role in the DVD tying his fly and talking about choosing the right fly. I know he only fishes one fly, but I wish there was just more of him talking about tenkara and passing along his wisdom. After the Ishigaki Kebari is tied by each person it pretty much is all Chris Stewart who does the tying. I know he says he is not an expert at tying flies, but I must say that his flies are awesome. I would love to one day tie flies like he does. This DVD is not something that most normal people could sit through straight for 2.5 hours. I broke it up into chunks so it did not get overwhelming. I must say that it is nice to have all these patterns in one spot that I can reference anytime I want. There are a ton of patterns they tie. It is a great way to be inspired to make your own up. Take a little from each and see what you get!
It has inspired me to sit back down at the vice and to take my time in watching what I do as I tie. It has given me some pointers on how to tie great looking flies, and that I do not need to go overboard with buying materials. Just a few will do ya! It was a very informative DVD and one to add to the collection if you are a tenkara angler. I will say that it is a must have for someone who wants to learn to tie tenkara flies, and for someone who is just starting out. The price of the DVD isn't to crazy. It is $24.99. Like other people who have reviewed the dvd, a few different camera angles of the flies being tied would have been helpful. I almost would have preferred if this was a download instead of a hard DVD copy. The reason for this is that they could have easily made it available in HD. I know that they filmed it using cameras that are capable of that, but maybe it would have cost to much. Just a little nit pick on my part. Other than that it is great. Nothing you want to tackle in one sitting, but a great resource to have...and its volume 1...this means there are more to come!!
